We are celebrating funding for maternal health care in the Massachusetts State Budget!

Summary: 7 of our 9 maternal health budget priorities passed in either the House or Senate!🎉

$1.2M for Birth Centers including a statewide birth center grants program and earmarks for Neighborhood Birth Center, Seven Sisters Midwifery, and Worcester Community Midwifery

$4.3M for maternal health law implementation - universal postpartum home visiting, midwife integration, perinatal mood and anxiety digital resources and awareness campaign, fetal and infant mortality review, and pregnancy loss awareness

$220K for Moms Matter Act perinatal mental health grants (passed by Senate)

Midwives reimbursement correction to ensure that all MassHealth members can benefit from the 2024 maternal health law.

Massachusetts Senate passed $1.1M for birth centers and $220K for maternal mental health support!

Here is the breakdown:

  • Senator Liz Miranda secured a third consecutive year of funding for $1M for a statewide birth center grants program.

  • In addition, Worcester Community Midwifery received a dedicated $100K with the adoption of a budget amendment championed by Senator Robyn Kennedy.

  • Senator Miranda also secured $220K, the first infusion of funding for the Moms Matter Act mental health grants program that passed in the 2024 Maternal Health Omnibus Law, making it a real program not just a framework on paper.

September 14-20, 2023 marks the first ever Birth Center Week, an event started by the national non-profit Birth Center Equity to "celebrate and elevate the impact and potential of birth centers, with a focus on community birth centers that provide safe, culturally-reverent, midwifery-led health care for all." We are celebrating Massachusetts birth centers past, present, and future.
