Massachusetts issues first certified professional midwife licenses!

✨Licensed Certified Professional Midwives (LCPMs)✨

It's really happening! Massachusetts has now issued the first licenses to certified professional midwives. LCPMs will be able to enroll as MassHealth providers, staff birth centers, and attend home births in a more integrated system of care. We are so excited to celebrate this milestone, and to see access to midwifery care and birth options expand in Massachusetts.

This victory belongs to all of us: the many midwives, families, volunteers, legislators, and supporters who persisted over decades of advocacy. We did it!

What does it mean to have licensed certified professional midwives, (LCPMs), in Massachusetts?

Certified professional midwives practicing in Massachusetts can now:

  • Apply for a license.

  • Obtain a Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration.

  • Enroll as MassHealth provider.

  • Provide midwifery care and clinical leadership in freestanding birth centers.

How will certified professional midwife licensing impact access to birth options in Massachusetts?

  • For the first time, MassHealth members will be able to have insurance coverage for a home birth attended by a CPM.

  • Birth centers and community health centers will be able to hire CPMs.

WE'RE NOT DONE!

Stay connected as we continue to advocate for

  • access to midwives

  • access to community birth (at home or in a birth center)

  • fair reimbursement

  • sustainability

  • midwifery education

  • and more
